Spain

R-Lo recommends "the anonymous Lazarillo de Tormes, an outstanding alternate choice for Spain."

This book, published anonymously in Spain in 1554, is considered by many to be the first picaresque novel. It provided a literary model for Cervantes' Don Quixote and describes the ingenious ruses employed by a boy from Salamanca to outwit a succession of disreputable masters.
